Description

What makes this guitar special: Introduced in 1981 and designed in an effort to replace the 4001, 1983 was the first year that the 4003 was offered exclusively, while the 4001 was discontinued. The differences between the two appear minor, but truly make a difference in terms of feel, playability, and usage. First, the Diecast bridge, which historically had a tendency to pull upward over time, was mounted with two additional screws at the factory to prevent such issues. Second, the truss rod system was improved, moving the adjustment point to the base of the neck, and re-designed to accommodate roundwound strings. Thirdly, they were explicitly designed for both mono and stereo outputs. Cosmetically, all classic appointments are there-bound top, bound fingerboard with triangle inlays, cresting wave headstock, and the ever-cool jetglo finish. This piece was recently acquired from the original owner, and shows very limited wear. It is in outstanding condition for a 34 year old bass. It has been professionally inspected and setup by our expert in-house luthier. It plays terrific and will arrive ready to play right out of the case!

Cosmetic condition: Awesome shape for its age, with just some light wear throughout. There are visible surface scratches, scuffs, nicks, and dings present across much of the back of the body under scrutiny, with a few very small chips in the finish on the top of the headstock. The hardware shows some light tarnishing, and there is some tape residue on the base of one side of the bridge pickup. There is no horseshoe pickup cover included with this bass.

Body: Double cutaway solid maple body in jetglo finish with aged white binding. Split white pickguard, chrome bridge pickup surround, and diecast bridge with individually adjustable saddles.

Weight: 9 lb, 7.7 oz

Neck: D-shaped maple neck with bound rosewood fingerboard, black side dots, and pearl triangle inlays. Offset headstock with cresting wave and white Rickenbacker truss rod cover. Sealed Grover tuners work great. 1 11/16” nut width, 33 1/4" scale length. Neck is straight and truss rods are functional.

Electronics: Dual single coil pickups in the neck and bridge positions. 3-way pickup selector switch and black control knobs with white indicators, 2x tone, 2x volume. Pots date to ’81, and all electronics are fully functional.

Playability: Outstanding! The action is low, the pickups are punchy, and the neck is breeze to maneuver. Suitable for anything from overdriven growl to classic thumping tones. Plus, it weighs in at under 10 lbs, making it perfect for long nights of playing.

Case: Original hard shell case included. Case has some ghosting from a decal that has since been removed but is in otherwise great shape.
