Description
A rare vintage 1967 Lectrolab S500 combo amp and super rare matching extension cabinet. Produced by Sound Projects of Chicago, Lectrolab amps were available via mail order catalog like Valco or Danelectro-produced amplifiers. These are scare enough as is, but what makes this set special is the matching extension cabinet, which likely was a custom order from the factory. The cab is constructed from the same box as the combo, only with an extra board installed to cover the chassis opening. While the extension jack on the combo has a very "DIY" feel, both speakers have matching date codes, and all cabinet wire is similar to the wire used in the circuit--consistent with an "off-menu" factory job. We'd be surprised if this set was not one-of-a-kind.
Soundwise, the amp has a very AC15 feel--with a strong midrange plus the top-end sparkle of negative feedback-less EL84s. The extension cab adds an extra dimension of woody bottom end resulting in a little stack that is very satisfying to play through. This set is a great buy for budget-minded players or amp collectors alike. It has been cleaned and tested. It is fully functional and sounds fantastic.
