Though alt-rock icon and Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis is characterized by his love for Jazzmasters, he falls back on his '58 Tele when tracking screaming lead lines. This J Mascis Signature Telecaster is a faithful recreation of Mascis' '58 Tele, and it's a showstopping axe with a righteously-good sound.
With its Road Worn "C" shaped neck and nitrocellulose lacquer finish, this Tele plays with a buttery-smooth response that makes riffing away for hours a joyful experience. The neck is pleasantly stout, giving it a surprisingly natural in-hand feel and an excellent boost in sustain. Complete with a 9.5" radius fingerboard and 21 jumbo frets, this guitar feels incredibly comfortable and is ready to rock straight out of the case.
This Telecaster comes loaded with two J Mascis Custom '58 single-coil pickups that perfectly nail the highly sought-after Dinosaur Jr. lead tone. Pumping out snappy highs, snarling mids, and a tight low-end response, these pickups sound impeccable. Push them to the limit through a full-throttle amp and your favorite fuzz stompbox, though, and you'll be able to channel screeching feedback, crushing distortion, and all sorts of experimental tones. And, if you need a little extra sonic versatility, flip the 3-position blade switch to select between bridge, neck, and out-of-phase pickup combinations.
Fender wanted to pay homage to J Mascis' own '58 Tele with this signature model, and they didn't disappoint. Boasting a Bottle Rocket Blue finish, a dazzling mirrored chrome pickguard, and an alder body, this guitar looks and sounds just like the original. It also sports a top-load Tele bridge with three barrel brass saddles, remaining true to Mascis' '58 Telecaster and giving a nice bump to the mids. Fit with Road Worn nickel and chrome hardware, this axe is a seriously sweet tribute to the Dinosaur Jr. guitarist.
