Description
A vintage 1952 Fender Super V-Front tube combo amp in great shape for its age. This amp was part of a large collection of amplifiers that we purchased from G.E. Smith back in 2017. It was purchased by one of our local customers shorty thereafter. He recently sold the amp back to us, so it's finally time for this one to see the light of day.
Condition-wise, the amp is above average for an early 50s tweed. The tweed has some of the typical wear you see on Fenders of this age, but overall it is in great condition. The control panel is in exceptional shape with near-perfect silk screening and minimal pitting on the chrome. The leather strap handle was replaced many years ago.
The speakers were replaced long ago with Eminence 10ALP Alnico speakers. These speakers are identical to the highly-regarded Alnico Blue speakers found in the original Fender Bassman Reisues. The output transformer would have been mounted on one of the speakers originally, so it was moved to an appropriate spot on the chassis when the speakers were replaced. That said, both original Triad transformers are in great shape and fully functioning.
Circuit wise, there were only two original capacitors left in the amp when we purchased it, and those remain in the amp. Instead of offering the amp with a mish-mash of unoriginal and potentially unreliable capacitors, we chose to replace any unoriginal cap with a quality modern equivalent. The filter caps were replaced with F&T electrolytics and the film caps with Mallory 150s. Aside from two resistors in the power supply, resistors are all original.
Sound-wise this amp is everything you'd expect from a classic tweed amp. It features a warm, saturated tone that lends itself well to single-note leads. The speakers sound like vintage alnicos with an articulate top end and moderate speaker distortion. It will definitely make a great blues/roots-rock amp. This rare vintage amplifier has been cleaned and fully serviced. It is fully functional and sounds incredible.
