Description
A vintage 1966 Montgomery Wards / Airline 62-9034A tube combo amp. This Valco-manufactured amp is the Airline-branded version of the iconic Supro S6420 Thunderbolt, believed by many to be the amp responsible Jimmy Page's guitar tone on the early Led Zepplin records. The 9034A's layout and circuitry are identical to that of the Thunderbolt, making these amps an affordable alterative to the sky-high prices of the Supro version.
This example appears to be a transitional model. The original Triwec power transformer (mfg. week 25 of 1966) is the is that of the earlier tube-rectified model. While the chassis and circuitry are that of the later solid-state rectified model. In this amp, the rectifier filament leads are unused, and the center-tapped high-voltage winding feeds a full-wave rectifer instead of a bridge rectifier.
Sonically, the amp is everthing you'd expect. It features a deep, warm clean tone that transitions into a thick and crunchy overdrive as you turn up the volume. Plug in a tele, turn every control to ten, and you won't be dissapointed. A great buy for any serious player or amp collector. This amp has been cleaned and serviced. It is fully functional and sounds absolutely fantastic. Incudes after-market Supro slip cover.
