Description

A vintage 1959 Fender High-Powered Tweed Twin Amp. Produced for barely two years, the 5F8-A is one of the rarest and most desirable Fender amps. Along with its half-power cousin, the legendary 5F6-A Bassman, the high-powered Twin ushered in the era of modern guitar amplifiers. With its long-tailed pair phase inverter and 85-watt power output, the high-powered Twin was years ahead of its time.

Cosmetically, the amp has seen some work over the years. It was re-tweeded and re-grilled some time ago. The re-tweed job was exceptional and, now that the lacquer has aged out a bit, is virtually indistinguishable from original tweed. Additionally, the handle and some hardware has been replaced. At some point, a hole for an additional preamp tube was punched in the chassis, but this has since been plugged.

Sound-wise, this amp is a dream to play through. The circuit has been fully restored to original 5F8-A specs, with brand new power supply filter and coupling caps. The original caps were long gone, so we chose to start fresh with the industry standard modern caps for tweed restorations (F&T and Mallory 150). The amp features one period-correct Jensen P12N Alnico (mfg. 1960) and a modern Jensen C12K reissue. The P12N retains the responsive, slightly-mid-scooped tone of the original, while the C12K adds some modern focus and punch to the midrange.

This amp can do it all---deep, resonant cleans all the way up to blistering overdrive. After just a few seconds of playing this gem it will be pretty obvious what all the hype is about. This amp will make the perfect centerpiece to any vintage amp collection. It has been cleaned and serviced. It is fully functional and sounds absolutely fantastic.
