What is the Chase Bliss Habit?

What is the Chase Bliss Habit?

The Chase Bliss Habit is a unique experimental delay effect pedal that uses a 3-minute-long buffer memory to take elements of what you’ve played in that prior period of time and allows you complete control of how those past elements interact with what you’re playing in the present. Think of the Habit as a delay with a memory.

What does the Chase Bliss Habit do?

At its simplest, the Habit is a delay pedal that can be up to a minute long. At its most extreme it becomes a pedal that generates a self-contained song made of chance encounters based on the audio you send into it and the settings you’ve chosen on the pedal itself. In between both of these places is a pedal delay pedal that becomes something truly unique and transcends the definition of a typical delay effect.

How does the Chase Bliss Habit sound?

It sounds fantastic! The Habit has exceptional audio fidelity as you’ve come to expect from Chase Bliss. It lets you break away from the present moment and create echoes of the past instead. Or both at once. It does this by recording every sound that goes into the pedal, so you can revisit them later. You can collect sounds you made 2 minutes ago and turn them into loops, or harmonize along with old playing, or build impossible echo patterns.

Who is the Chase Bliss Habit good for?

The Habit is an effect pedal for musicians who are sonically adventurous. It's not necessarily the best pedal for someone looking for a more traditional delay effect. The Habit is ideal for experimental musicians across all genres. It works as beautifully on guitar as it does on synthesizers and even vocals!

What kind of controls does the Chase Bliss Habit have?

The Habit has six rotary knobs, four of three ways switches, and two soft-touch footswitches adorning the face of the pedal which allow for all kinds of real-time control over the Habit’s effect. The rear of the pedal hosts sixteen different DIP switches that unlock a whole host of features and customization that allows the user to create something truly unique.

Rotary Knobs:
  • Level (Ramp): This knob controls how loud your echoes are. If you ramping is engaged this knob now controls the speed of the movement.
  • Repeats: Like a traditional delay pedal, this knob sets the number of echoes. At the maximum setting you’ll get a stable, infinite build-up, like looping.
  • Size: The best way to think of the Size know is like the Time knob on a typical delay. It sets the time between echoes. Adjusting the Size knob offers clean adjustment meaning there is no pitch warping as you turn the knob. Your echo simply gets shorter or longer. It ranges from a short 50ms, up to a full 60 seconds in length. You can also set the Size by tapping the left footswitch.
  • Modify: The Modify knob introduces different effects for shaping your echoes using one of six different modifiers.
  • Spread: This knob adds a secondary echo that draws its audio from the Habit’s buffer memory. Shorter settings all you to craft unique multi-tap style delays whereas longer settings will repeat entire sections and phrases from your prior playing.
  • Scan: The Scan knob is how you interact with the Habit’s buffer memory. It has two different functions depending on the setting of the MANUAL dip switch. Automatic is the default setting and introduces an auto-scanning effect that will automatically scan through the Habit’s buffer memory and play bits of old audio. The knob sets how frequently it will auto-scan and how far back into the memory it will go. In manual mode you choose the part of the memory that is played. The minimum position will play the present and turning up the knob will go further and further back into the memory.

  • Three Way Switches:
  • Left Switch (1,2,3): This switch chooses modifier whether modifier 1, 2, or 3 are being used.
  • Center Switch (A, Off, B): This switch chooses between which bank of modifiers you’re using or if the modifier is off.
  • Right Switch (In, Out, Feed): This switch changes the internal audio routing of the habit which can lead to dramatic effects!
  •    -In: In creates an accumulating effect from the Modify. With each echo, the active modifier is applied again and again.
-Out: Out results in a consistent effect from Modify. Each echo will sound the same.
-Feed: Feed routes Habit’s output back to the input so everything you hear is recorded to the memory.

    Center Bottom Switch (Presets):
  • The left and right positions each store a preset, while the middle position is live and represents the Habit’s current knob and switch settings.

  • Footswitches:
  • Left Footswitch: The left footswitch acts as both a tap tempo controlling the Size parameter and as a momentary hold switch that engages the auto-scanning function of the Scan mode.
  • Right Footswitch: The right footswitch activates the pedal or bypasses it with each tap. Holding it will cause the echo to loop so you can play over the top of it without affecting the echo.

  • DIP Switches:
  • The rear panel of the habit has a pair of DIP switches comprised of eight DIPS each. These switches adjust the behavior of the Habit and are broken up into two different sections.
  •    -Expression / Ramp: This set of DIP switches controls the behavior of the expression pedal input.
-Customize: The blue-labeled DIP switches on to rear of the Habit allows you to access alternate behaviors and functions within the pedal.

How does the Habit’s memory work?

As you perform with the Habit, it stores what you play on a 3-minute-long piece of digital tape. As long as the pedal is on it continuously records your input. You can think of the memory as an additional audio source, full of everything you played in the prior 3 minutes. The Scan and Spread knobs choose if, and how the memory plays back. When you bypass the Habit, it dumps the memory and starts fresh unless the Collect or Always DIP switches are engaged.

    Conclusion

The Chase Bliss Habit is unlike any effect pedal that has ever existed. You can expect to find countless hours of sonic exploration with the Habit along with other pedals in your current pedalboard setup. The results you achieve using it will be truly unique to you as a player and that is part of what makes this pedal such a magical piece of gear.
