Known for their crushing, gritty leads and experimental riffs, Japanese rock group Boris has been changing the face of alternative music since the early '90s. Setting out to recreate Boris' guitarist Wata's legendary fuzz tone, EarthQuaker Devices created the Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainer - and it sounds absolutely killer.

The Hizumitas is a faithful recreation of Wata's go-to fuzz pedal, the Elk BM Sustainer. Just like the Elk, the Hizumitas pumps out tons of heavy distortion and grit complemented by smooth sustain, giving it a massive, speaker-shredding tone. Despite its brutal and aggressive nature, the Hizumitas is surprisingly clear and articulate, courtesy of its tight low-end, snarling mids, and cutting highs, allowing you to cut through any sludge or dirt with ease.

Sporting an intuitive interface and a dynamic Sustain and Tone control, the Hizumitas can harness loads of great sounds straight out of the box. The Sustain control is highly responsive, giving you access to a broad range of saturation. Turning this knob even slightly generates noticeable changes, allowing you to fine-tune your fuzz to your liking, whether you prefer a subtle grit or wall-shaking distortion. Manipulating the Tone control adds a whole new dimension to your sound. Turn the Tone knob clockwise, and your tone will thicken out, with scooped mids, diminished highs, and heavy, thundering lows. Turn it counterclockwise, and you'll add piercing highs and glassy mids to your signal. The Volume control on the Hizumitas offers an impressive amount of output gain - with unity at around 10 o'clock, you'll have plenty of volume on tap for face-melting solos and savage breakdowns.

Paying homage to 6-string sorceress Wata's iconic Elk BM Sustainer, this stompbox delivers an outstanding array of distortions. If you've been on the hunt for an incredibly versatile yet easy-to-use fuzz pedal, you need to check out the Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainer from EarthQuaker Devices.
