EarthQuaker Devices and Sunn O))) present the Life Pedal Volume III, an octave distortion unit designed to replicate the tones heard on Sunn O)))'s eighth studio album, Life Metal. Blending crunchy rat-inspired distortion with vintage octave effects, this pedal is excellent for high-gain players seeking rich, saturated grit and searing octaves.
Life Pedal's Amplitude side is based on the classic "White Face" distortion unit, but it offers three clipping options instead of one, allowing players to choose what works best for their rig. The first position uses no diodes, producing a full-on, grinding OpAmp assault at max volume. In second position, two silicon diodes and an LED are engaged in an asymmetrical clipping configuration, resulting in a smooth, compressed crunch. The final position produces that classic White Face distortion, chock-full of harmonics and growling sustain.
The Octave side of Life Pedal is an analog full-wave rectifier based on a vintage design. Using the Octave knob, users can slowly blend in the octave effect to their liking. Players can also use the expression control for hands-free octave swills mid-riff, bringing a whole new dimension to solos and breakdowns. Since this is a monophonic effect, it works best with single-note melodies - chords will sound chaotic and destructive (which might be exactly what you're looking for.)
The Magnitude section of the Life Pedal is a simple MOSFET boost that's great for highlighting solos and lead lines. It's 100% clean and adds very little color, making it the ideal boost if you're already in love with your setup.
