Description

The Electro-Harmonix Adrian Belew Limited Edition Echoflanger Pedal brings back the analog modulation unit that became an important part of Belew's famously experimental guitar vocabulary. The original bucket-brigade Echoflanger helped inspire sounds ranging from the steel-drum-like guitar on Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" to the animal-like textures associated with King Crimson's "Elephant Talk" and Belew's "The Lone Rhinoceros." This limited reissue retains the original Filter Matrix, Flange, Chorus, and Slap Back modes, then adds two combination modes that push the circuit further into the unusual territory that made Belew's use of the original so memorable.

The six modes give you a lot more than conventional chorus and flange. Filter Matrix stops the LFO for fixed comb filtering and manual flanging, while Slap Back removes modulation for a short echo. The new Slap Back + Filter Matrix mode combines those two effects, and Chorus + Flange recreates an accidental sound Belew discovered by parking the mode selector between Chorus and Flange on his vintage unit. Feedback ranges from restrained modulation into self-oscillation, while Rate, Width, and Tune let you determine the speed, range, and center point of the modulation. A rear Blend switch can remove the dry signal entirely, opening up more pronounced vibrato-style sounds.

The analog circuit is paired with stereo outputs and true bypass switching with mechanical relays, so this reissue is ready to fit into a modern stereo rig without losing the unusual behavior that made the original interesting. We think that's the real appeal here. You can dial up classic chorus and flanging easily enough, but if you want a modulation pedal that encourages you to find sounds outside those familiar categories, the Echoflanger gives you plenty of room to experiment.
