The Electronic Audio Experiments Scattering Stereo Reverb Pedal takes a different route than the smooth, diffused sound we usually associate with digital reverb. Its four stereo algorithms are built around delay structures inspired by the discontinued MN3011 bucket brigade device, giving you everything from fluttering multi-tap echoes and metallic reflections to stable infinite reverb and swelling nonlinear textures. It can absolutely handle spacious ambient sounds, but we think the appeal is broader than that. Scattering can behave like a reverb, delay, modulation effect, or some combination of all three without losing the immediacy you'd want from a pedal in a working rig.
Space changes the length of the individual delay taps by varying the DSP sample rate, while Dwell controls feedback and decay. The analog Preamp can stay clean or push into warm saturation, and an analog two-pole low-pass Filter lets you darken the entire reverb output or push further into murky, artifact-heavy sounds. An onboard LFO provides sine or smooth random modulation, with a modulation matrix that can assign movement to Space, Mix, Preamp, Filter, and Dwell. The four modes cover X1's six-tap MN3011-inspired response, the longer and more delay-like X2, an eight-delay Matrix reverb capable of stable infinite decay, and a 16-tap Nonlinear mode with a swelling, reverse-like envelope.
Scattering is also unusually deep when you need it to be. Its true stereo processing can operate independently on both channels, or the MISO mode can turn a mono input into a stereo field with adjustable Spread. You get 16 preset slots, three accessible directly from the pedal, plus morphing between two groups of settings, expression and 0-5V CV control, extensive MIDI control, and selectable trails. Despite everything happening underneath, the main controls remain accessible enough to treat it like a normal stompbox. For players who want reverb to become an active, playable part of the sound rather than simply adding a room around it, this is one we'd spend some serious time exploring.
