Description

The Gibson Custom 1958 Mahogany Explorer Reissue in Antique Natural is a time machine dressed in wood and metal. It brings back one of the boldest designs in electric guitar history-a shape so radical in 1958 that only 19 Explorers were shipped in its first year. While it was originally a commercial underdog, the Explorer eventually became a cornerstone of modern rock and metal, wielded by legends like Eric Clapton, Allen Collins, Rick Nielsen, and James Hetfield. This reissue captures the spirit of the original with period-correct specs and a rich mahogany twist that adds warmth, weight, and unmistakable vintage attitude.

Instead of the original Korina wood, this version uses a two-piece mahogany body and matching mahogany neck, which gives it a thicker, darker tonal character that suits heavier genres. The 50s Vintage neck profile fills the hand comfortably, while the Indian rosewood fretboard and 22 medium jumbo frets keep everything smooth under the fingers. It's a dream for players who want the look and feel of a 50s Explorer with a deeper, more powerful tonal core.

At its heart are two unpotted Custombucker pickups with Alnico 3 magnets, delivering snarling midrange, dynamic highs, and that unmistakable vintage sizzle. The traditional control layout-two volume, one tone-is wired with vintage-style CTS pots and a phone book capacitor for an authentic response and tonal control. Hardware includes an ABR-1 no-wire bridge and lightweight aluminum stop bar tailpiece, all finished in aged gold to complement the guitar's understated yet commanding Antique Natural finish.

Visually, this Explorer is as close as you'll get to the real thing without hopping in a DeLorean. The sharp, futuristic body shape, cellulose dot inlays, and Kluson reissue tuners round out the vintage-correct details. And when it's time to hit the road, it comes in a brown/pink Lifton reissue hardshell case-just like it would've back in '58.

The 1958 Mahogany Explorer Reissue is more than a nod to the past; it's a fully realized instrument with tone, playability, and style that's just as relevant today as it was revolutionary then. At Cream City Music, we love gear that tells a story-and this Explorer doesn't just tell one, it screams it.
