Description
The Gibson Southern Jumbo Original Acoustic-Electric in Vintage Sunburst carries forward one of Gibson's great round-shoulder flat-top designs while adding a significant update for today's performing player. With roots in the prized Southern Jumbos of the 1940s, this model combines the warmth and punch associated with mahogany construction with the dressed-up appointments that have long distinguished the Southern Jumbo. Now equipped with the LR Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system, its amplified voice is designed to preserve more of the character that makes this guitar so compelling unplugged.
A Sitka spruce top joins mahogany back and sides with traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing, giving the Southern Jumbo a responsive voice with strong projection, woody warmth, and enough definition to keep individual notes clear within a full strum. Multi-ply binding on both the top and back adds a more refined visual character, while the gloss nitrocellulose lacquer and Vintage Sunburst finish keep the presentation firmly connected to Gibson tradition.
The mahogany neck uses a SlimTaper profile and a compound dovetail neck-to-body joint. Its rosewood fingerboard has a 12-inch radius, 20 standard frets, and mother-of-pearl parallelogram inlays. A 24.75-inch scale gives the strings a familiar, slightly relaxed feel that works particularly well for expressive leads, blues phrasing, and long rhythm sessions. A 1.72-inch bone nut, bone saddle, TUSQ bridge pins, and open-back tuners complete a traditional and dependable playing setup.
The major update is Gibson's LR Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system. Dual bridge plate sensors capture both string and body energy without relying on a traditional undersaddle transducer, while an internal preamp is specifically voiced to complement the sensors. The result is an amplified sound designed for excellent dynamics, string-to-string balance, note definition, and useful feedback resistance while retaining the natural character of the guitar. Soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls remain easy to reach from the playing position while staying discreet from the audience's perspective.
The Vintage Sunburst finish, multi-ply binding, mother-of-pearl parallelograms, tortoise-style '50s pickguard, and nickel open-back tuners give the Southern Jumbo its unmistakable identity. It feels a little more dressed up than the archetypal workhorse Gibson flat-top, but its fundamental character remains direct, warm, and wonderfully suited to making music.
At Cream City Music, we think the new HiFi DNA system makes an already versatile Southern Jumbo even more appealing for working musicians. You still get the classic spruce-and-mahogany Gibson voice and distinctive Southern Jumbo presentation, but with an electronics system designed to translate more of that acoustic personality through a PA, amplifier, or recording setup. For songwriters, performers, and Gibson enthusiasts alike, this is a thoughtfully updated version of a genuine classic.
