Description
What makes this guitar special: This ’66 is a truly special instrument, with a fabulous acoustic resonance and tight neck body connection that translate into a positively stellar electric tone. This bass was owned and played by Cleto Ochoa (Cleto & the Chaparrals), who cut a few 45’s with R&B legend Allen Toussaint in the late ‘60s and continued to play this beauty until recently. In fact, a photo of Cleto & Allen is included with the bass, along with a couple of the original 45’s! The 3-color sunburst on this piece is gorgeous, and the wear patterns give it an honest patina that is drop dead gorgeous. Professionally setup by the experts at Cream City Music, it’ll arrive ready to play right out of the case.
Cosmetic condition: A true blue player, with various signs of playwear throughout-scratches, dents, dings, nicks, chips, and scuffs, with numerous areas of finish wear and checking. The upper corner of the pickguard has chipped off, but is included with the bass. The original tuners were gone when the bass came to us, and have been replaced with some new reproduction tuners that fit the original mounts perfectly. The hardware shows some oxidation, and frets show wear consistent with the age of the instrument but still have life in them. A previous owner stamped his SS number on the back of the neck plate as well. Overall, this one has an honest look to it, with a beautiful patina.
Body: Contoured double cutaway ash body in three-tone sunburst finish. Top-loading 4-saddle bridge with original bridge cover and pickup cover. 3-ply tortoise pickguard with treble side rest.
Weight: 8 lb, 14.8 oz
Neck: C-shaped solid maple neck with black side dots and clay dot inlays. Bound Brazilian rosewood fingerboard is in great shape, and while frets show wear they still have some life in them. 1 1/2" nut width, 34” scale length. Reproduction Fender tuners work great. Neck is straight and truss rod works as it should. Neck dates to April of '66.
Electronics: Original single coil pickups (Neck-7.65k ohms, Bridge-7.29k ohms) with black knobs, 2x volume, 1x tone. Pots date to '66 and all electronics are fully functioning.
Case: Original hard shell case included. Case is in pretty rough shape, and the spines are not sturdy, but it does its job.
