The Beetronics Tuna Trem Tremolo Pedal packs nine distinctly different approaches to tremolo into Beetronics' unmistakable tuna-can format. It's a good fit if you want the familiar pulse of traditional amp-style tremolo but don't want to stop there. The nine Species move from smooth sine and hard square waves into lo-fi movement, syncopated rhythms, evolving patterns, volume swells, and even momentary kill-switch effects. That makes the Tuna Trem equally useful for straightforward modulation and the more experimental rhythmic sounds that would normally require a much more involved pedal.
The Species control selects between Surfer Bee, Leafcutter Bee, Bug Bee, Pecker Bee, Helicop Bee, Jatai Bee, Orchid Bee, Sweller Bee, and Morse Bee modes. Speed and Depth provide straightforward control while adapting their functions to the selected Species. Surfer Bee handles smooth classic tremolo, while Leafcutter Bee produces harder square-wave chopping. The other modes progressively move into fragmented, repeating, alternating, syncopated, and evolving modulation patterns. Sweller Bee turns the footswitch into a control for volume swells, while Morse Bee uses it as a momentary kill switch.
What we like about the Tuna Trem is that you don't need a complicated control panel to get into its stranger sounds. Pick a Species, work with Speed and Depth, and the character of the pedal changes substantially depending on the mode. If a standard tremolo feels a little too predictable for what you're trying to do, this gives you plenty of rhythmic and textural alternatives without making the pedal difficult to use.
