The Catalinbread EG1 Lo-Fi Delay Pedal takes the idea of degraded repeats seriously, giving you three distinct ways to color the delay line without making the pedal difficult to use. Radio, Tape, and Digital Television modes each recreate a different kind of imperfect signal transmission, making the EG1 a great fit for players who want anything from worn-in slapback and murky echoes to unstable shoegaze textures and deliberately mangled digital repeats.
Each mode changes the function of the Mod and Transmission controls. Radio introduces high-pass and lo-fi filtering with radio-style artifacts; Tape adds modulation and distortion reminiscent of mechanical wow and flutter; Digital Television introduces Nyquist-error downsampling with slight bitcrushing. Transmission determines the depth or blend of these artifacts, while Feedback can push the processed repeats toward self-oscillation. You still get the fundamentals of a versatile delay, including up to approximately 900ms of delay time and a Mix control that ranges from completely dry to completely wet.
Tap tempo is built into the footswitch, with color-coded LED feedback for Classic, Tap Input, and Tap Bypass modes. Tap Bypass is particularly handy because it lets you bypass the effect while retaining your tapped tempo for when you bring it back in. We like that the EG1 can get properly strange when you want it to, but its familiar delay controls make those lo-fi textures easy to work into a normal rig.
