Description

The Gibson J-45 Standard Acoustic-Electric in Vintage Sunburst carries forward the sound and feel of Gibson's most enduring acoustic design. Introduced in 1942 and affectionately known as "The Workhorse," the J-45 has earned its reputation through decades of songwriting, recording, and live performance. Its round-shoulder body, spruce and mahogany construction, comfortable short scale, and direct, balanced voice make it the kind of acoustic that fits naturally into a wide range of musical settings. This Standard model stays true to that versatile formula while adding Baggs HiFi DNA electronics for dependable amplified performance.

The round-shoulder body pairs a solid Sitka spruce top with solid mahogany back and sides. Traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing supports the top, helping the J-45 deliver the warm mids, tight bass, projection, and dynamic response that have become central to the model's identity. Mahogany keeps the fundamental clear and focused, while Sitka spruce responds well to changes in picking attack. Whether played lightly behind a vocal or pushed through a full rhythm part, the J-45 is designed to remain balanced and musical. A gloss nitrocellulose lacquer Vintage Sunburst finish completes the familiar Workhorse appearance.

The mahogany neck uses Gibson's SlimTaper profile and a 24.75" scale length, creating a comfortable feel for chords, bends, and extended playing sessions. A 12" radius rosewood fingerboard carries 20 standard frets and understated mother-of-pearl dot inlays. The 1.73" nut width provides familiar acoustic string spacing, while Grover Rotomatic tuners with kidney buttons provide smooth adjustment and reliable tuning. The simple appointments suit the J-45 particularly well, keeping the emphasis on playability and performance rather than ornamentation.

A traditional Belly Up rosewood bridge anchors the strings and is paired with a TUSQ saddle and TUSQ bridge pins. The familiar teardrop pickguard reinforces the understated J-45 aesthetic, while nickel tuner plating and a black and white truss rod cover continue the straightforward visual theme. The result is an acoustic that looks immediately familiar without feeling overly decorated, exactly the kind of practical presentation that has always suited the Workhorse name.

For amplified use, Gibson equips the J-45 Standard with the Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA system. Rather than relying on an undersaddle pickup, the system uses two lightweight sensors mounted to the internal bridge plate. These sensors work with optimized individual preamps to capture the guitar's dynamics and natural character while leaving its unplugged response intact. Soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls provide quick adjustments while remaining discreet, and the active system offers the feedback resistance needed for practical stage use.

At Cream City Music, we think the lasting appeal of the J-45 comes from how little explanation it needs once it is in your hands. The Sitka spruce and mahogany construction produces a focused, balanced voice, the short scale and SlimTaper neck make it approachable, and the round-shoulder body has the warmth and projection to work equally well for songwriting, recording, or live performance. With its classic Vintage Sunburst finish, HiFi DNA electronics, and included Gibson hardshell case, this J-45 Standard is a modern Workhorse built to do exactly what the name suggests.
