This is a brand new 1962 Spec 6128 Duo Jet model from the USA Gretsch Custom Shop. It is a truly phenomenal guitar. The Duo Jet holds a unique place in the history of the electric guitar: Originally launched in 1953, the Duo Jet lives in a fascinating “in-between”, somewhere between a hollow body and solid body. The Duo Jet’s design features a 3 ply arched top just like its iconic hollow body counterparts from Gretsch, but with back constructed of a deeply chambered piece of mahogany. This mahogany back is hollow underneath the pickups and bridge, making it quite different from a more conventional “semi-hollow” design. This body, paired up with Filter’Tron pickups and a Bigsby tailpiece, yields a tone and vibe completely unique to the Duo Jet. It can be punchy and bright, or mellow and deep responding very differently according to how aggressively it’s played. It’s a guitar that can go from Chet Atkins to Malcom Young and everywhere in between. Like the original designers at Gretsch, Stephen Stern and company at the Gretsch USA Custom Shop have also spared no expense to recreate this guitar.
With one notable exception, original specs have been painstakingly recreated with this remarkable reissue finished in black with gold hardware. In lieu of the Burns vibrato tailpiece that an original Jet made in ‘62 may have shipped with, this version comes with the far superior Bigsby tailpiece. Additionally the “zero fret” generally found on a ‘60s Gretsch model has been omitted. The body carve and neck profile are spot on, yielding a well-balanced and lightweight guitar that’s very faithful to the 1962 version.
This guitar exudes master built USA Custom Gretsch quality with an astounding level of precision and attention to detail. It plays extremely well, with a comfortable medium “C” shaped neck, and low, even action all the way across the ebony fretboard. The TV Jones-made Filter’Tron pickups are spot on recreations of the original pickups, and they’ve got a wonderful clean chime, with big tubby bass, and shimmering top end. With some gain they’ve got a snarl like no other, with a mid-range that has plenty of bite without sounding harsh. These are phenomenal pickups that truly capture the vibe of the vintage Filter’Trons.
The aging process utilized by the Gretsch Custom Shop is the best we’ve ever seen. Simply handling this guitar is an incredible experience in and of itself. The finish is gently aged with a medium luster and a nice worn in feel. There are a few areas where more “wear and tear” can be seen, just as you’d expect from a 56 year old guitar that has seen a few gigs and many hours of play. There is very light “relicing” throughout the guitar’s finish with a tiny bit of wear at the headstock and on the back. Upon very close inspection you can see nearly imperceptible finish checking throughout the guitar. Plus , the gold plating is worn in just the right way, giving the guitar the look of one that’s been well loved and well played, just as we’ve seen with the many vintage Gretsch models that have come through Cream City Music.
This guitar will ship as shown in the photos along with a nice assortment of Gretsch Custom Shop goodies. These include a boutique quality guitar strap by El Dorado, an embroidered canvas utility bag, a Gretsch Custom Shop patch and sticker, reissue style documents and polishing cloth, and the certificate of authenticity signed by Stephen Stern. The guitar comes with the ‘50s reissue style “Grey Speckle” Style hard case by TKL.

Why We Love Gretsch
Gretsch has been handcrafting guitars for over 135 years. The unique sound of the Gretsch semi-hollow body guitar has become synonymous with rockabilly music, one of the first styles of rock ‘n roll. Gretsch guitars are a favorite among musicians like Chet Atkins, Brian Setzer and George Harrison. At Cream City Music, we love Gretsch too, which is why we always have a huge selection of new, used and vintage Gretsch guitars in stock.
