JHS Fumble FET Preamp Pedal is a compact clean boost and preamp built around one of the stranger pieces of D-style circuit history out there. Originally released accidentally inside the NOTADÜMBLË V1 kit, players quickly latched onto the clean side of that pedal and asked for it as a standalone effect. The result is the Fumble, a production version of the JFET preamp circuit JHS originally cloned from the Dumble BBC-1.
At its core, the Fumble is a JFET-based clean boost with a very different approach to gain shaping than most pedals in this category. The Output control works as your overall volume, while the Input control simultaneously adjusts bass response and input gain. Fully clockwise keeps the signal full and open, while rolling it back tightens the low end and changes how the pedal pushes whatever comes after it. It works exceptionally well as an always-on tone sweetener, a boost into overdrives, a front-end push for already cooking amps, or even as a solo boost at the end of a chain. The overall feel stays dynamic, articulate, and responsive instead of compressed or overly colored.
From a usability standpoint, the simplicity is part of the appeal. There are only two controls, but the interaction between them gives you more flexibility than you might expect from a straightforward clean boost. The compact enclosure, low current draw, and true bypass switching make it easy to integrate onto almost any pedalboard. We especially like this one for players who want to tighten up and enhance the feel of their rig without drastically changing the core character of their guitar or amp.
